L’HOMME CIRQUE (Man of the Circus)
David Dimitri
There is not a more famous one-man show in the world of New Circus than this one!
Family show suitable for adults and children 4+ years
Duration: 75 minutes without intermission
The Marquee, Smíchov embankment (by the railway bridge)
David Dimitri, Swiss aerialist and acrobat, and his new show L’Homme Cirque will premiere in Prague at the ARENA Festival. The son of a legendary Swiss clown Dimitri, David is firmly rooted in the world of traditional circus, but he grew up at the time when the young circus generation ventured out to explore the conventional format. Hence the “New Circus” was coined. David Dimitri is an internationally acclaimed artist; he performed on the Broadway in New York or with Cirque du Soleil, one of the world’s most famous circus ensembles.

David Dimitri, also known as “tightrope king”, is a respected personality among the established names as well as rising stars of the genre. It is mainly his extraordinary discipline that keeps him at the top of his field even at the age of 55; he is capable of making somersaults on the tight wire, and in his one-man show, which is over an hour long, he is the artist, acrobat and actor, plays several instruments and he shoots himself out of a cannon to the dome of the marquee…While doing all this, he takes time to touch and entertain the audience with his characteristic humour, feeling and the poesy of his unique show…

In addition to all the skills David shows in his performance, he has made his name also with several long-distance tightrope walks. He is a consummate professional and a dude… I’m looking forward to his everyday tightrope walk above the Smíchov embankment… (Petr Forman)

L’ABSOLU
Boris Gibé
A unique metaphysical circus show about the relationship between the man and nature… in a truly extraordinary viewing space
The show is suitable for young people over the age of 9+
Duration: 60 minutes without intermission
Silo, Smíchov embankment (by the railway bridge)
L’Absolu is, without doubt, one of the most original New Circus performances today. Boris Gibé is an artist who is always looking for new narratives in this world, which is very attractive to the audiences. Gibé has exceptional physical, dance, acting and acrobatic experience from previous shows, and he has been developing and rehearsing his new solo show for the last ten years.

The show premiered only in October 2017, but it is already certain that it will be hugely popular, as promoters fight to book it. We are proud that the audiences at the ARENA Festival can see it as some of the first people in the world. Boris Gibé tell his story mainly in the visual form, through a fusion of atmospheres, music, sounds, lights and materials. All in the presence of one actor. No matter how mystifying the story may be, the narrative is so strong, visual and original, that it immerses the viewer into Boris’ world, inviting the audience to spend suspenseful sixty minutes with him. (Petr Forman)

Inspired by elements, gravity, human existence and our roots and desire to match the power of nature, the artist tell his story in an original way, in a no less original space, which has been designed and built to measure to the author’s purposes. Boris Gibé calls the twelve-metre high round pen a “silo” and uses it horizontally and vertically. The audience sits alongside the whole perimeter in two spiralling rows, which makes for a unique and extraordinary experience in itself.

The “silo” seats only 100, and only ten L’Absolu shows will be exclusively performed at the ARENA Festival. Do not miss this unique experience!

ALADDIN
Forman Brothers Theater
A journey through an exotic land in pursuit of a great adventure
Family show suitable for adults and children 7+ years
Duration: 75 minutes without intermission
Loď tajemství, anchored at the Smíchov embankment
The family show Aladdin invites into the world of One Thousand and One Night. It tells the colourful story of the boy Aladdin, which interjects with the story of the King Shahryar and the brave and wise Scheherazade. A distant world fragrant with exoticism, a world of nomadic tribes, wise viziers, mysterious destinations, sprawling palaces with gardens belonging to powerful rulers and kings – all this unfurls in front of the audience. Thanks to a magic lamp he finds, the poor young boy Aladdin goes rags to riches. The genie indulges his every wish: a beautiful palace, where Aladdin ushers his new love, the princess Badralbudur. The fortune, which came to him with the magic of the lamp, is only short-lived and dubious. The young Aladdin must fight a powerful mage who has been after his lamp from the start and wants to take hold of it, and he has to rely on things that no magic can give him: his courage, the love of his princess Badralbudur and the loyalty of his camel, a friend he meets on his journey.  Matěj Forman and his team created a magical show, where puppets, shadows, decorations, voice and music together bring alive caravans of camels, open the gates of a grand palace and, under a starry night sky, the vastness of desert beckons. This family show immerses audiences big and small in a world of imagination where a great adventure awaits.

Turin-based circus school FLIC
Risk – and the freedom that comes with it – and serendipity: 24 young bright Italians flying over the river Vltava!
Suitable for adults and children 7+ years
Duration: 60 minutes without intermission
Loď Tajemství, anchored at the Smíchov embankment
The world premiere of the graduation show performed by 24 students of the Turin-based circus school FLIC, made especially for the theatre-boat Loď Tajemství.

For three years, the students trained, worked themselves hard, led ascetic life of discipline and pushing their own limits. Their graduation show illustrates their motivation, desire and ambition…they are right at the start of their professional path. The show, conceived with the help of one of the greatest and most experienced teachers and directors in the realm of New Circus, Roberto Magro, will have its final rehearsals and tweaks in Prague at the theatre boat Lod Tajemství. And ARENA Festival 2018 will host its world premiere and a couple of the first shows… (Petr Forman)

Today, FLIC cultivates young New Circus talents. It is one of the best circus schools in the world; every three years, it produces a new generation of several dozen circus artists. Under the leadership of an experienced director at the end of their three-year course, they demonstrate their skills in a graduation show.

The organizers of ARENA Festival 2018 offered the theatre boat Loď Tajemství to FLIC to use for the graduation show of this year’s crop of circus talent. Twenty-four young acrobats, circus artists and actors from Italy, with their variety of skills, will descend on the Smíchov embankment in early June.

Roberto Magro, the director, is one of the most sought-after New Circus teachers and directors; he spent a few years as Art Director at FLIC, which was originally a school of gymnastics and acrobatics. Then he became Art Director at one of the world’s largest resident circuses La Central del Circ at Barcelona. Presently he has his own circus company and he is Director of the Brocante Festival in Frisanco, which he founded over a decade ago. He helped inaugurate several circus companies, and he teaches at several circus schools and produces circus shows all over the world. He collaborates with the best acrobats, comedians, actors and personalities of the global theatre circuit.

Do not miss this acrobatic and artistic show charged with pure Italian energy!
